In the darkness of the subterranean world, something stirs the stale air, like a great beast awakening. Twin points of reflected light appear, opalescent orbs bobbing closer. The creature is small, and spindly. It twitches forward, parting its lips in a hiss through jagged, fish-like teeth. The sound bounces around the rock walls, echoing, repeating and growing. Scratching at a sore on the waxy skin of its chest, head juddering on its scrawny neck, it draws a jagged shard of some poor unfortunate’s shinbone from a moldering sackcloth wrapped around its waist. Its eyes stare, perfect circles of bulging whiteness. Another pair appears behind, and another, and another. The cavern glimmers with eyes like the sky at night. This is a goblin.

"Aye, a single goblin's no threat to a man, but when was the last time you saw a single goblin?" -Ander Valiente, military strategist

Chris: We actually started this whole project with Goblins. They were the first sketches and the first color pieces that we worked on, which really laid the ground work for the rest of the monstrous races. I personally love using goblins in my games. They can be formidable in mass or when using mechanized weaponry on the battlefield, comical as NPCs, and down right terrifying when encountered deep underground by a party that's gotten in over their heads. We've split them into 3 sub races in this book, each with their own unique traits, but they are all still goblins. Their write up includes all sorts of inspiration for GMs to draw upon when creating their adventures, or when using pre-written material. We know our attention to detail will enhance your gaming sessions, which is the ultimate goal with all of our products.

Hobgoblin Preview

Marching to the beat of an unheard drum, the figure tramps forward at the head of the column, one of several legions forging a new throughway over the hills, the plume of smoke dominating the skyline now all that remains of their last stop. Layers of mail and plate clatter, scuffed, scratched, dented, but the figure bears them as easily as its own skin. The creases carved in its leathery face speak of battle-cries and pain, not laughter. His keen ears hone in on commotion in the column behind, lesser soldiers jostling and bargaining for their share of the spoils, greedy eyes panning over their captives, squabbling over the chattel like commoners at a fruit market. He barks a short order in a harsh tongue, silencing them in a heartbeat. The march continues, unabated. This is a hobgoblin.
“Gnolls will raze a town or two, you might lose a city to orcs, but hobgoblins? Let them linger and you’ll lose the kingdom.” -Ander Valiente, military strategist

Ralph: Hobgoblins are really interesting to write about because they are so different from the other races of the book (though you could say the same about any of them). They’re not dumb brutes you can easily talk your way round like an orc, or some huge frightening monster like an ogre; they are threatening because of their organisation, intelligence and discipline. It’s been great to delve back into my childhood of reading about Romans and Greeks (well, Spartans anyway) to steal some pieces of real history I can exaggerate and twist to monstrous extremes.

Half Way To The End!
over 7 years ago – Sun, Aug 21, 2016 at 07:30:03 PM

We have 14 days and 6 stretch goals remaining. As most of you Kickstarter veterans know, the most funding happens in the first week and last week of projects like ours.

While we are writing the content for each of the stretch goals we've achieved, we would greatly appreciate each one of you continuing to share the project with your gamer friends. Social media like Facebook and Google+ are excellent ways of getting the word out to a lot of people at a time, and posting about the project on forums helps to get a conversation going.

The final 72 hours of the project are going to get a little nuts, then the final 48 will see a huge flood of backers jumping in at the last minute. This will likely mean a lot of updates in a short amount of time. We don't mean to be spammy, be just want everyone to know what's going on.

Thank you for backing our project and happy gaming!

-Chris
